San Francisco SAFE (Safety Awareness for Everyone) will hold a public safety awareness press conference to kick off the 2014 Lunar New Year (Year of the Horse) celebration. The event will be hosted in partnership with Chief of Police Greg Suhr; the San Francisco Police Commission; The Board of Supervisors; District Attorney’s Office; and Captain Garret Tom, Commanding Officer at Central Police Station.

On Wednesday, January 15, the San Francisco Police Department, SAFE, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, American Red Cross Youth for Elderly Bay Area Chapter, Community Youth Center (CYC), the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, and community volunteers will hand out crime prevention tips and resources to merchants and shoppers in Chinatown. Distribution will continue throughout the city on subsequent days.

Information to merchants will include safety tips to prevent extortion, burglary, robbery, and details on what to do if there is an incident and how to communicate with the police. This year, we will also provide small red packets with information on theft prevention of electronic devices.

“The Lunar New Year is a time for celebration, family, and community,” said Assemblyman Phil Ting (D-San Francisco). “Going into a new year, we must look out for each other to prevent crime and help those who are victimized by it. SAFE really helps our community continue to be vigilant so that everyone can have a safe, happy Lunar New Year.”

A second press conference will be held on Thursday, January 16 at 11:00 am in the Taraval Police District at Irving Street @ 22nd Avenue. Both events are made possible by the above agencies and generous support from the Portsmouth Square Garage.
