“One Billion Rising” is a global campaign that brings attention to a startling United Nations statistic: one-in-three women in the world will be a victim of rape or assault in her lifetime – a figure that is equivalent to one billion women. The campaign to promote justice and gender equality began in 2012 by activist Eve Ensler who is well known for writing the play “The Vagina Monologues.”

A one-day event calling on one billion women around the world to activism and draw attention to the startling figure was held on February 14, 2013 (Valentine’s Day). San Francisco leaders joined women on the steps of the City Hall on that day and answered the calling. Mayor Ed Lee and his wife thanked those in attendance for their presence and urged them to make a difference in stopping violence against women.

The director of the Mayor’s Office of Violence Prevention Services-Diana Oliva-Aroche, announced City leaders will again participate in the global demonstration “One Billion Rising.” They will be joined by women and their supporters on the steps of City Hall on February 14, 2014 from 4pm to 6pm.

Mayor Ed Lee cordially invites you to join him and his wife in their solidarity with women throughout the world in condemning violence against women.

Although California is known to have some of the most rigid laws that penalize violence against women, San Franciscans recognize it as a global issue that must be addressed. The City may be known for its tolerance and diversity. However, San Franciscans are also known for their unequivocal denunciation of any form of violence.
