On Friday, January 16, 2015 the SF Recreation and Parks (Rec and Park) Department organized its 31st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon at the Minnie and Lovie Recreation Center in the Taraval Police District. The Luncheon was to recognize and celebrate Dr. King’s legacy.
Captain Lum and Sergeant Mannix were invited as well as Chief Suhr as the keynote speaker. Officer Marchand, who grew-up in the nearby Ingleside Terrace, also attended. Supervisor John Avalos and Director Phil Ginsburg of Rec and Park spoke at the luncheon.
Chief Suhr delivered an impassioned speech about Dr. King and his ironclad belief in non-violence. The audience gave him a standing ovation in the end. Many attendees praised the Chief for his work in strengthening the relationship between his officers and their communities.
